Sept. 11, 1776. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge meet with Admiral Howe on Staten Island for a peace conference. Disappointing them, Howe does not acknowledge U.S. independence and only offers for the patriots to put down their arms await the generosity of the British government.
