Sept. 11, 1776. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge meet with Admiral Howe on Staten Island for a peace conference. Disappointing them, Howe does not acknowledge U.S. independence and only offers for the patriots to put down their arms await the generosity of the British government. Peace is only available on the condition that the colonies return to their allegiance and obedience to the British crown. They reject his terms.
