August 9, 1776, Nathanael Greene receives his long-desired promotion as one of the four new major generals. He commands troops on Long Island. Continental officer John Marshall describes the Continental Army as “unstable in its nature,—incapable, from its structure, of receiving discipline,—and inferior to its enemy, in numbers, in arms, and in every military equipment.”
