July 14, 1776, On this day in history. Lord Howe sends George Washington a letter but fails to address him as “Your Excellency,” the common title for the leader of an army. Instead Howe addresses him as “George Washington, esquire,” the name for a private citizen. An insulted Washington refuses the letter and rightly concludes that the British aren’t serious about giving the colonies independence. #TBT Throwback Thursday #LovingAmerica http://ow.ly/i/eBffx
